Petroleum Refining & Petrochemical Industry: Integration and Coordination under Uncertainty.
Petroleum refining and petrochemical industry accounts for a major share in the world energy and industrial market. They represent the economy back-bone of many countries around the world. The current volatile market environment and the continuous change in the customer requirements present an everlasting pressure to seek opportunities to align and coordinate the different components of the industry. These include finding opportunities for improved systems synergies through integration possibilities and seeking alliances towards achieving a global optimal production strategy.
In light of the above, the objective and contribution of my research will be to develop a multisite petroleum refining and petrochemical industry integration and coordination scheme under uncertainty through mixed integer programming. In order to achieve this objective, a framework will be devised for the design of an integration and coordination policy of multiple refineries in order to explore potential synergies and efficient utilization of resources. The system will then be studied under various uncertain parameters including market demand, product prices and process yield levels. Similarly, the petrochemical industry will be modeled as a network of production processes under different uncertain parameters and risk measures. Finally, both systems will be integrated to yield a quantitative tool to analyze the simultaneous optimization of the systems and provide an insight into the important and potential economic trade-offs between the industries.
